The Acting Director of the State-run Agency for Public Information (API), Nadia Slater, was reportedly attacked at her home in Clare Valley on Tuesday morning (May 5), according to well-placed sources.
A female relative, an elderly woman, who was also present was likewise injured in the incident, which is believed to have involved an intruder. Both women were taken to hospital.
Their conditions have not yet been confirmed.
According to reports, someone broke into Slater’s home, reportedly through a bathroom window, and began choking and beating her. Slater broke free, after which the perpetrator grabbed a gas cylinder and beat her about her body.
The perpetrator then reportedly turned his attention to Slater’s aunt, a 72-year-old woman and began to beat her, and leaving her bloodied.
Slater then managed to get outside and raise the alarm and neighbours came to her rescue.
There is reportedly no history of contention or disagreement between Slater and the alleged perpetrator.
Police are understood to be processing the scene as investigations continue.
A male suspect has been identified and is in police custody.
The incident has unsettled some residents of the Clare Valley community in South Leeward.
We will continue to track this story and bring updates.
The development comes days after Slater was reported to have been placed on leave following a public error in which she mistakenly referred to Prime Minister Dr Godwin Friday as Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves.
Similar errors have been made publicly by other persons, including government ministers.
